He then studied anthropology at the University of Chicago and ethnomusicology at Indiana University in 1957–58 and the University of California at Los Angeles from 1961–63, where he earned his PhD.

His marriage to Ms. Vera-Perez produced five sons: Emmanuel, Ernesto Jr., Erwin, Edmond and Edward. Author of The Music of the Magindanao in the Philippines. Contributor. As an ethnomusicologist, Maceda investigated various forms of Jose Maceda collected audio records materials of traditional music amongst various populations in Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia, part of these audio archives are deposited in the CNRS – Musée de l’Homme audio archives in France (a digitized version is available online). He graduated from University At Buffalo State University Of New York School Of Medicine medical school in 1998.
At a young age, he became interested in studying architecture, but found that he did not have the aptitude … He performed as a pianist in France, the Philippines and the USA from 1935–57, during which time he introduced many new works, mainly by composers from France, and pioneered a French style of piano-playing in the Philippines. Life. Maceda studied piano with Victorina Lobregat at the Academy of Music in Manila, where he graduated in 1935, and with Alfred Cortot at the École Normale de Musique de Paris from 1937–41.
He undertook music research in the field throughout the Philippines and in eastern and western Africa, Brazil, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. In 1917, in the year that Jose Maceda was born, on July 28, between ten and fifteen thousand blacks silently walked down New York City's Fifth Avenue to protest racial discrimination and violence. He began sketching at the age of eleven.
